What is the Top 49?

The Top 49 reader’s poll is a ranking of some of the most influential and powerful modern-day male figureheads in the realms of business, entertainment, sports, and politics.

The List isn’t like the "Most Sexy" and "Most Beautiful" lists published elsewhere. Success in a single field wasn’t enough to make the cut — readers had to choose men who both excel in their profession and exemplify prized male traits (style, intelligence, character, etc.)

The Top 49 Men List follows in the footsteps of AskMen.com’s Top 99 Most Desirable Women list, a popular yearly roundup that debuted in 2001. AskMen.com readers cast 2.5 million votes in 2006 to award Jessica Alba first place.

The Top 49 and sports

The glorification of elite athleticism is by no means a new phenomenon. Sporting excellence has long been revered — particularly among the general male population. Professional athletes can often serve as sources of immense inspiration, entertainment, and adoration. The ability to excel in the sporting world can take years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance — all highly regarded and valued characteristic traits in our society. Not surprisingly, when AskMen.com readers were asked to select the best representatives of the male population, a significant number of prominent athletes made the final cut.
